Hurricane Helene weakens to Category 1 storm off North Carolina
Hurricane Helene weakens to a Category 1 storm as it moves farther away from the North Carolina coast, officials say.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm’s maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 85 mph (140 kph) as it traveled northeast at 21 mph (33 kph).
The center says the core of the storm was about 405 miles (650 kilometers) southeast of Bermuda late Saturday. It was expected to pass near the island over the weekend.
A Category 1 hurricane has sustained winds of 74-95 mph (119-153 kph).
Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to reach hurricane strength on Monday but will then weaken by the middle of the week. Helene and Isaac are not expected to impact the U.S. mainland.
