Rep. Guthrie in line for committee chairmanship
WASHINGTON (AP) — Outgoing U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie of Kentucky is in line to become the top Republican on the House Education and Labor Committee.
Guthrie announced his bid for the ranking member position Tuesday, following Virginia Rep. Bobby Scott’s ascension to committee chair in the new Congress.
Guthrie’s office says securing the ranking member position would be “a tremendous opportunity to continue serving,” going on three subcommittees within the committee and helping to shape workforce development policy and other issues.
“We fought hard for Kentucky workers and students and ensuring they have opportunities they need to succeed,” Guthrie said in a statement. “I look forward to building on that work next Congress.”
The full Republican Steering Committee will make the assignments official in January.
Guthrie, who represents a deep-red district in central Kentucky, has served in Congress since 2009.
