Cold Case Killing Solved in Mansfield, Ohio

Authorities in Mansfield, Ohio, have finally solved a cold case killing that had remained unsolved for over three decades. Using DNA evidence, detectives were able to identify the suspect as Harold Johnson, who passed away in 1998.

The case dates back to January 1987 when the body of 45-year-old Mary Jones was found in her apartment. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death. Despite efforts to gather evidence and track down the perpetrator, the case went cold.

In 2019, detectives decided to revisit the case and sent DNA evidence to a lab for analysis. The results came back with a match to Harold Johnson, a man who had a criminal record and lived in the area at the time of the murder. Further investigation revealed that Johnson had died in 1998.

While Johnson may have escaped justice in life, advancements in technology and forensic science have enabled law enforcement to finally bring closure to Mary Jones’s family and friends. This case serves as a reminder that no matter how much time has passed, authorities will continue to pursue justice for victims of violent crimes.
