Mexico government defends president’s call with Trump
Mexico’s president isn’t setting any traps for his Saturday phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says the call with his U.S. counterpart is friendly and respectful.
López Obrador is preparing to fly to the U.S. next week to mark the new North American trade treaty between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. He says he “won’t get into any controversies” and warns political opponents they can criticize him but “nothing bad is going to happen.”
Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum took a more critical stance. She said Friday that “we can’t pretend” there aren’t differences with the U.S., but said it was the diplomatic duty of Mexico’s government to maintain a respectful relationship with its northern neighbor.
