Iranian foreign minister: Trump attempted assassination on Iranians

A top Iranian security official on Monday accused former President Donald Trump of being behind a purported assassination attempt on an Iranian scientist.

Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of the country’s Supreme National Security Council, made the comment on his Twitter account. He claimed there had been “serious indications” of an Israeli role in the alleged assassination attempt, which he said could be linked to Ukraine.

“This international terrorism is only possible with direction and support from the U.S. administration,” Shamkhani said, without providing any further details.

Shamkhani’s remarks came after the pro-Western president of Ukraine reportedly claimed that he had prevented an assassination attempt on a senior Iranian official in Kyiv.

The comments also follow reports that Trump had considered launching a military strike against Iran during his last weeks in office, but was dissuaded by his advisers.

The escalation of tensions comes as Iran is set to hold presidential elections on Friday, in which hard-liners are expected to make gains.
