Former President Trump Hacked
Late on Monday, the Justice Department revealed that it had seized some of the emails of The New York Times reporters in Trump’s investigation. They did this in an unusual way. They emailed Google and tried to order them to hand over the emails. Google said no and told The Times what was happening.
The request was sent to Google on March 3 and disclosed on Wednesday. It was supposed to be kept secret. But it was accidentally put in a public court system.
Of note in this case: At the time of the 2020 election, the department also tried to get information on Times reporters from Apple. Apple also fought that effort.
The department also said on Wednesday that it tried to get Washington Post reporters’ phone records in 2020. The department said it got court approval to get these records.
The Trump administration also had secretly seized phone records of reporters from CNN and The Post in 2017. Trump was angry about stories on Russia and wanted to know who leaked them. This case led to the tracking of reporters’ movements from their phone data.
