House Democrats have officially introduced an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The article accuses Trump of “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the deadly Capitol riot that took place on January 6th.

The article, introduced by Representatives Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Ted Lieu of California, along with Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, states that Trump engaged in high crimes and misdemeanors by “willfully inciting violence against the government of the United States.”

In a statement, Raskin emphasized the importance of holding the president accountable for his actions, stating that Trump’s incitement of insurrection was a “direct attack on the Capitol, Congress, and the constitutional process.”

The impeachment article comes after Vice President Mike Pence rejected calls to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has urged Pence and the Cabinet to act, warning that Congress may move forward with impeachment if they do not.

The House is expected to vote on the article of impeachment this week. If passed, Trump would become the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice.
