BMW recalls vehicles for 3rd time for engine fire risk

German automaker BMW is issuing a recall for the third time in the United States for a problem that can cause engine compartment fires.

The recall covers many 5-Series, 6-Series, 7-Series, 8-Series, X3, X4, X5, X6 and Z4 vehicles from the 2011 through 2021 model years. Also included are the 2012 through 2020 3-Series, 4-Series, 6-Series, 7-Series, Z4, X1, X2, X3 and X4 models, and the 2020 and 2021 4-Series Gran Coupe, 6-Series Gran Turismo, and X5 M and X6 M vehicles.

Continental Automotive Systems, the Detroit-based company that made the systems, said moisture can get into the antilock brake control unit and cause an electrical short, possibly leading to engine compartment fires. The company previously recalled the parts in 2018 and 2020.

The recall is scheduled to start on April 2. Owners will be notified by mail, and BMW dealers will replace the antilock brake unit at no cost to owners.
